Get Involved

Want to join our team? There are many ways to get involved. If you're tehcnical, take a look at our technical roles below. If not, we still want you!

Engineer

Purpose

Be responsible for the design, build, and verification of one (or more) technical components in one (or more) subteams. The range of time commitment can vary depending on time-of-year and subteam, but generally engineers can expect ~5 hours per week, including meeting times.

Responsibilities

  1. Demonstrate ownership of ≥ 1 component or system
  2. Adhere to scheduling constraints on owned component(s) or system(s)

Outcomes

  1. Technical experience in your chosen subteam; Expertise on your specific project(s)
  2. Community with Duke AERO members
  3. Access to professional development opportunities and aerospace mentors

Technical Lead

Purpose

Be responsible for the yearlong execution of an entire subteam: aerodynamic simulations, avionics, combustion devices, payload, propulsion controls, plumbing, recovery, solid, propulsion, or structures. The range of time commitment can vary depending on time-of-year and subteam, but generally technical leads can expect ~10 hours per week, including meeting times. In addition, technical leads typically own ⅓-½ of the technical responsibilities in the subteam, but this is not a requirement as much as a trend.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage project timeline
  2. Delegate project tasks tailored to engineers’ interests. Provide useful resources
  3. Communicate regularly to other leadership on subteam progression

Outcomes

  1. Independence in engineering decision-making
  2. Expertise on executing a large engineering project from the ground-up
  3. Sharpened team management skills
